Hypnotherapy Can Reduce Your Pain
As far back as the mid-1800s, hypnotherapy has been used for therapeutic purposes. A young surgeon named James Braid noticed the medical benefits from being placed in a trance. And since then, the treatment has been instrumental in naturally treating a whole host of illnesses, both physical and emotional.
It’s also been extremely useful in treating those suffering from chronic pain. In 2008, a study was conducted on a group suffering with fibromyalgia. An MRI scan was used to measure the activation of pain felt by the group. Simple suggestions using pain-reducing messages resulted in the decrease of pain in the patients, and in the MRI scans.
Because of the misuse of the practice, irreputable practitioners and the negative depiction of hypnosis in the media and TV programs, the treatment developed a negative reputation.
Some of the falsehoods associated with hypnosis include the following:
Myth: Hypnosis is an abnormal and potentially dangerous state to be in.
Truth: Hypnosis is the same state people go into when relaxing, reading a book, driving on a motorway etc. The difference with hypnosis is you are entering into this state deliberately and with a certain outcome in mind.
Myth: Hypnosis is a state where the hypnotist has control over you.
Truth: Although a few unethical hypnotists have put the treatment in a bad light, a good therapeutic therapist will tell people exactly what is going on, and in many ways teach them self-hypnosis techniques.
Myth: When in a hypnotic-state, patients can be given suggestions to do things we don't want to do.
Truth: It’s true that hypnosis can help people become susceptible to suggestions – which is the whole idea behind the treatment. But, even when under hypnosis, people won't do things completely outside of their usual realms of behavior. People will still hold the same values and ethics as they do in their daily life.
Truth: Hypnotherapy is a completely safe, it is extremely powerful, and with a trained and ethical practitioner, your life can improve 100 percent.
An interesting facet of hypnosis is that it can be used when we’re not expecting it. For example, a simple suggestion or even a devastating prognosis by a doctor or a specialist, creates a kind of shock, and in that state, we can be more susceptible to a suggestion or command. So if our doctor says our condition is untreatable and we may not recover, it is almost like a hypnotic command when it’s used unconsciously.
We should keep in mind that while hypnotherapy is a potentially powerful tool for pain reduction and healing the mind and body, we need to remain vigilant about how much value we place in what others say about our condition. Once we have accepted another’s opinion that recovery is not possible, that our condition is untreatable, we can really take that belief to heart, lessening our chances of a healthy outcome.
Additionally, our own internal dialogue can work against us if time and time again, we question and worry about our health and wellbeing. We are, on one level, hypnotizing ourselves to continue to think that way. And, our beliefs can work for us if we keep thoughts positive imagine a sense of extreme wellbeing, we can keep ourselves on that path, and truly make it happen.
