Depression comes in different forms, just like other illnesses like heart disease and diabetes. It affects almost 10% of Americans, that’s almost 20 million people; with twice as many women being diagnosed with the illness then men. The economic cost for this illness is high, but the cost of human suffering is impossible to estimate. Depression interferes with every day activities, and causes pain for the depressed person but also to those around them. Serious depression can disrupt and destroy family life as well as the life of the ill person.
Major depression is when a combination of symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat and feel joy in everyday life. Another type, though less severe, is called dysthymia and involves long-term, chronic symptoms that don’t disable the individual, but prevents them from functioning or feeling good. Many people with dysthymia also experience major depressive episodes at some time in their lives.
Bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness, is characterized by mood changes, from severe high (mania) to just as equally severe lows (depression). Sometimes the mood changes are dramatic and rapid, but most often they’re gradual. When in the depressed cycle, one can have any or all of the symptoms of a depressive disorder. When in the manic cycle, one may be overactive, over-talkative, and have a great deal of energy. Mania often affects thinking, judgment and social behavior in ways that cause serious problems and embarrassment. For example, the individual in a manic phase may feel elated, full of grand schemes that might range from unwise business decisions to romantic sprees. Mania, left untreated, may worsen to a psychotic state.
Research shows that some types of depression can run in families, suggesting that it might be something inherited. Major depression seems to occur generation after generation, but still occurs in those with no family history of the disease. Whether inherited or not, research has proven that depressive disorders are associated with changes in brain structures or brain function.
Those who suffer from low self-esteem, who don’t develop the skills to recognize and express feelings, who have experienced a trauma like rape or death of a loved one, who consistently view themselves and the world with pessimism or who are readily overwhelmed by stress, are prone to depression. Alcoholics and addicts often experience depression and use substances to self-medicate. It’s been reported that when alcoholics and addicts decide to get clean and sober, they often get depressed during the first year or two of their recovery while their brain chemistry returns to normal function.
The good news is that depression is treatable. Depression can be successfully treated with hypnotherapy/hypnosis and holistic methods such as a nutrition-based programs that are offerred by Dr. Robert.
