It’s actually a term defined by the US government as the “bypass of the critical factor of the mind (that part that compares new information with old information already stored in the subconscious mind) and acceptance of acceptable selective thinking.”

That’s it, really. Hypnosis enables us to sort of detour around this “comparing mechanism” so that the subconscious can begin to understand and accept new information and beliefs, allowing us to adjust our habits, and make powerful changes right away.

What does hypnosis feel like?

It’s a state of mind more than something we can “feel.” Here’s an example: Have you ever had a certain knowledge of something, then suddenly, for whatever reason, maybe you read an article or had a conversation with an expert in the field, and got a deeper understanding. Most people call that their “a ha” moment. That’s the way it is with hypnosis. You already have some of this “deeper” knowledge, and hypnosis allows you to become more aware, to access that knowledge, and positive changes follow. If we had to attach a “feeling” to hypnosis, it would be one of relaxation, as that is a way to bypass that “comparing mechanism” as mentioned above.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

At one time, it was believed that only 20 percent of the population could be truly hypnotized. We have since discovered that the small percentage is due to a hypnotist’s lack of technique, understanding, or training. In my experience, I have never had a client who didn’t go into hypnosis in my office. By following a series of very easy instructions, have average intelligence, you will go right into a relaxed, hypnotic state with the ability to do all of the mental processes required for effective results.

How do you go into hypnosis?

There are two ways:

  1. Automatically and naturally: Hypnosis can just happen spontaneously, like when you enter into a good mood without a real reason, or feel tired and then become energetic. One way to explain this is being reminded that we humans are changing every day, in many ways, and on many levels, i.e., mood, overall health and levels of consciousness. It’s natural for humans to go in and out of light, medium and deep levels of hypnosis.

  2. Being guided by a hypnotist. There are a number of ways to be easily brought into a very deep hypnotic state. A good hypnotist can do this in as little as 4 seconds, up to 4 minutes.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is actually a very natural and common occurrence in humans. Your friends and family, and even yourself have already been in a hypnotic state and probably didn’t know it.

One time a friend mine was so hypnotized when told to look for ketchup in his refrigerator yet kept insisting he couldn’t see it though he was looking right it!

Hypnosis has become a very common practice, and is almost mainstream. Believe me, if there was something unsafe about it, it would make the top story of the day. Not one person has ever been harmed by taking part in an hypnotic session.

The American Medical Association officially accepted it as a practice in 1958, and has incorporated the practice in treatment. For example, it has helped children control epileptic seizures, helped adults overcome infertility and IBS. It has helped control or eliminate pain and skin ailments. And, it has been extremely useful in pinpointing the cause of depression, anxiety, bad habits .. and on and on.

If this is so why don’t more doctors tell patients about hypnosis? Not that many doctors are trained in hypnosis. But more and more are embracing the practice and I get referrals from doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors and therapists almost daily.

Do you black out or pass out or become unconscious when hypnotized?

No. You hear everything that’s said by the hypnotist, in fact, we want you to hear and remember because that’s how change occurs: from the insight your mind receives during a session.

Do you go to sleep when you are in Hypnosis?

Hypnosis does not have you go to “sleep.” It’s more a deep relaxation, and because it happens quickly, and most times the eyes are closed, it can be confused with being asleep. (Note: Your hypnotist may actually use the word “sleep,” however, you don’t go to sleep. If a client goes to sleep, the hypnotist will need to wake him or her up, and begin again. However, read about my unique hypnosis program where I know exactly when you are in a state of hypnosis.

Can you get stuck in Hypnosis?

Good question. But think about it. If that ever happened, don’t you think it would have been big news! Let me emphatically state that no one has ever been stuck in hypnosis. And, since hypnotists usually get paid after the session, they are highly motivated to bring the patient out of it when the work is done.

Can the hypnotist make me do something I don’t want to do?

No. You are never out of control. If a hypnotist made a suggestion that was morally or ethically opposed to something you would say or do, you would emerge from the hypnosis immediately. If a hypnotist gives you a suggestion that you have no interest in, there will be no effect on you.
